Principal Peggy SpencerThe Pomfret School K-6 program of studies emphasizes an integrated approach to learning across all fields of knowledge. Teachers incorporate a variety of learning opportunities that support all students. The faculty strives for a balance between content (what we teach) and process (how we teach).

MATH AND SCIENCE
If you were to visit our school you might see children determining the flow or turbidity of our brook, raising salmon to release in the spring or calculating the distance their rocket traveled. Younger children gather and use data about sugaring and the weather or observe and record the insects in our gardens. Some students plant and tend gardens outside our classrooms in anticipation of the fall harvest and an entry in the Tunbridge Fair. Students study the planets, sun and the universe using the Horizon Observatory on our campus.

The math and science curriculum emphasizes problem solving and the accurate and appropriate use of skills, an understanding of concepts and an application of skills and concepts in solving problems.

LITERACY
Reading and Writing is woven throughout the curriculum. A stroll around the school would reveal older children reading to a younger student or engaged in literacy circles. Writing conferences are important in the development of writing and you will see conferences taking place throughout the school. Children have many opportunities to share their writing with a variety of audiences from the young author tea to the writer of the week during assembly. Some of our children have collaborated to produce a speak chorus for state and local audiences.

Children read and write from a range of text and genre. Instruction in reading emphasizes reading accuracy, comprehension, and the development of reading strategies such as questioning, predicting, and following themes. Writing instruction encompasses the teaching of grammar, punctuation, and spelling as well as development of purpose, organization, details, and voice and tone.

INTEGRATED ARTS
Performing arts and the visual arts curriculum draw upon the thematic areas of focus in the academic classroom. Singing, dancing and theater arts are alive in the Pomfret School and our halls and walls are bursting with student art work. As you stroll through the school you might see children composing a song about community workers, demonstrating colonial dances, or writing and performing a speak chorus about the conservation of our land. The walls may be covered with student made African masks, sketches of the trees on our school campus or student photos of our galaxy taken as part of an astronomy unit. Every other year the entire school community participates in a musical theater residency. Past performances include "The Boyfriend", "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", "The Wiz" and "Tom Sawyer, The Musical"

Quarterly talent shows, weekly assembly presentations, holiday programs, and artist in residence programs provide opportunities for children to practice and demonstrate their many, varied and unusual talents.

SOCIAL STUDIES/HISTORY
The social studies/history curriculum encompasses traditional and social histories, geography, citizenship, diversity and unity, economics, conflicts, and conflict resolution through the use of a wide variety of literature, simulations, primary sources, and research materials.

Students have organized an Ethnic Feast when studying traditions around the world, demonstrated dances and songs from the colonial period or presented a report on a county in Vermont visited with their family. Student Council members develop leadership skills and opportunities for the larger school community through service related projects.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Children at The Pomfret School have many opportunities for physical activities. In addition to meeting once a week with a specialist, children have several breaks daily for structured or unstructured activities in the multi-purpose room or our expansive outdoor area. Our rural location provides the perfect backdrop for recreational activities. Children can participate in a snowshoeing, skiing or skating program on Friday afternoons from January through the first or second week in March.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Foreign language is offered to children in grades 4-6. Beginning in November students receive French instruction four days a week for 30 minutes a day. Children participate in real world applications of language through skits and activities such as cooking and Mardi Gras planning and celebration.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
All of our extra-curricular activities are coordinated and coached by parent or teacher volunteers. Seasonal activities such as soccer, basketball, skiing, skating and baseball are available either through our school or through the Woodstock Recreation Center.

Chess club, Young Inventors Club, band and the drum corps are open to students at different times throughout the school year.
